CHAPTER FIFTEEN
ALICE
When I woke, I was back in the nest. It was Galen's, and he was next to me, enclosing me under the shadow of his wing. The open space around my body told me that Mishael and Rhys were not there. Perfect, I thought to myself â I would get a chance to talk to him, alone, without the other two potentially affecting what he said.
I reached out and traced the membrane of his wing, and he stirred, lifting it so that I could see. I smiled at him, able to see him with the sunlight coming in from the cave. He bared his teeth, pupils flaring wide, and rumbled in greeting.
"Hello," I whispered, rolling onto my side so I could stare at him.
Hello, Alice, I heard him reply.
I smiled. My hair was still braided, and I cradled the ruby in my hand. They had put me back in the nest naked, but I wasn't nervous about being exposed now. They were my mates, after all, and dragons had a different standard of modesty than humans.
"Mishael told me you gave me this," I said, showing him the ruby. He blinked, and nodded, his tail curling in pleasure. "It's beautiful. I love it."
I'm glad to hear it, he replied, smiling.
I sighed, and reached out to pet his strong brow. His nostrils flared and he let out a soft rumbling purr. "Galen," I murmured, and his eye met mine. "Why won't you show me your human shape? Are you unable to, like Frost?"
I was ready for the flash of dark, angry fear from his side of our mental connection, so it didn't make me recoil this time. I pretended that I didn't notice it at all, and continued to gently rub my fingers around the strong curve of his eye socket, to the hinge of his jaw, the corner of his wide mouth, and back up.
â¦No, he finally said. I can. It's been many years, but I can.
I sighed again. "I wish you felt comfortable enough to show me," I told him. "You're beautiful as a dragon, but I can't kiss you properly when you're this size." I smiled. "Or do other things."
The sound he made was not quite a laugh. It was too rough and bitter for that. I don't think you would want to kiss me if you saw me as a man. I frowned, a protest forming already, and he added; I am terribly scarred, Alice. I don't want to force you to let a monster love you.
My frown deepened, and I sat up, putting my other hand on the tip of his muzzle. "Monstrosity is deeper than skin," I told him. "The wolves who attacked me, they were physically attractive, but I was repulsed by them, because they were evil. The men in my town, even the pretty ones, didn't make me feel like you do, or like Mishael and Rhys do." I paused, and sighed. "I'm not afraid of scars."
Galen rumbled quietly. I could tell he wanted to look away, but wouldn't move until I released him.
